Inexpensive Kitchen Flooring

I'm a wee bit under the weather today. Sinuses *meh* My gorgeous 17yo made grilled cheese for all of us for lunch and it was creamy, gooey, goodness. He is currently "dialed" into work and frowning at his screen. I haven't the heart to remind him that it is end of term so he, like us, faces hours and hours of more screen time in the coming days. Sadly, he flies to Philly tomorrow to spend a month or so at his dad's. He - and his grilled cheese - will be missed. Anyhoodle...

I should be working on my MIS paper but instead I am researching upcoming house projects. Like many college students, I am trying to do everything on the cheap. On the cheap is fine when you like Ramen noodles and $.50 vinyl tiles. While I don't reject either if there is no option, I'd rather find something more interesting. This fall, we plan to put engineered wood in the dining room (old living room) and upstairs hall but I'm loathe to put in the kitchen as well - both due to possible water issues and because I really want a medium gray/light gray checkered floor. In my last house, I painted some of the ancient wood flooring in a black and white checkered pattern and I really loved it. Obviously, painting over newly installed wood flooring makes little sense and I'd rather not go the vinyl or tile route...so I'm thinking I'll make my own wood flooring out of plywood. Another blogger did this and I think it looks great:

You can see that the wood grain and the gaps (created by a penny spacer) make the floor look pretty authentic. I think an 18" checkerboard floor, painted on the diagonal, would be the perfect finish for this type of floor! This is a decent example of what I want it to look like:

I'll admit that warping is a worry. Luckily, the blogger who posted about this project followed up a year later and all is well. At less than 50 cents/sqft, if we really like it, that engineered wood may never happen. I doubt Marc and I will get to this project until June but whenever we do, I'll post about it.
