The "Fancy" House
We bought a new house, in the same town, in late August. It is a 1966 raised ranch. There are 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms in 1884 sqft upstairs, as well as a living room, dining room, kitchen, family room, foyer and screened porch. The house has a walk-out basement (in the back) that already has a garage, laundry room, bedroom and bathroom. The rest of that square footage is unfinished. For now!
More than one neighbor has told us that a friend or family member looked at the house when it was for sale and described it as "fancy." I guess the high ceilings, moldings, floors and paneled doors could be seen that way. From the outside, the house looks uptight. One of the changes we want to make is to soften it a bit. We're talking about buttery white trim and sage green shutters. Window boxes spilling over their confines and wildflowers in the half-moon in front of the stairs. Some of the Boxwoods will go; they are not doing as well as they were when this pic was taken in 2012. I think Hydrangeas would be lovely under those windows, don't you?

First thing, we had the wall between the kitchen and the family room removed. In its place, a rustic arch. Now, both rooms function as one. We've made other changes to the floor plan, such as placing our dining room in the intended living room. It's the largest room and we like to be able to move around easily even when people are seated. More on the floor plan later...

My hydrangeas in my backyard were blue when we moved in but were pink last year. I've been toying with the idea of altering the soil pH to regain blue. We had some of the Boxwoods removed, and plan to remove three more, but we have not yet planted bushes in their place. We did plant several perennials and two Butterfly Bushes in the demilune garden out front, though.
